Early in 2017 my mom told me about American Birding Association (ABA) Young Birder of the Year Contest and asked me if I want to join as my learning project. I decided to give a try because I want to try something new. I entered for junior category (10-13 yo) and decided to do three out of five modules: (i) field notebook, (ii) community leadership, and (iii) photography.
The biggest challenge for me that make me think twice is the compulsory field notebook module. I usually keep birds checklist, share the bird pictures after my birding trip, and blog about the journey. But I do not keep a detail handwriting field notebook. In addition the field notebook needs to be written in English. But out of my expectation, I really enjoyed it, especially when we need to sketch the bird.
I learnt a lot from Community Leadership Module. I organized bird walk to promote urban birdwatching to children of Jakarta age 9-16 years old. That was my first experience guiding a group. I actually felt quite nervous but the participants were very eager to learn and we had a great day. My mom helped me a lot in handling the group, she is an experienced children facilitator.
My mom helps me a lot. I think 1/3 work I made for this contest is from my mom. I have difficulty to write in English, because my first language is Bahasa Indonesia and I rarely use English. I also get support from several experienced birder, such as Ady Kristanto, Imam Taufiqurrahman from Indonesia Bird Atlas, and Nuruliati Yuwono. I am really grateful for all people that help me trough out the process until I can finished this contest and submitted the following modules on October 14, 2017.
Finally....after 4 months waiting, here comes the results. View a complete list of the 2018 Young Birder of the Year Contest results here, including winners of each module.
